چکیده

This paper provides a novel axiomatization of quasi-hyperbolic discounting, which imposes consistency restrictions directly on the intertemporal tradeoffs. The experimental design proposed in this paper will be useful for experimental work since it renders the short-run discount factor elicitation independent of the utility function. This makes comparisons of impatience across a spectrum of different consumption goods possible within the same framework, thereby providing a valuable tool for empirically exploring this new dimension. ∗We thank David Dillenberger, Drew Fudenberg, Simon Grant, John Horton, David Laibson, Morgan MacClellon, Fabio Maccheroni, Yusufcan Masatlioglu, Jawwad Noor, Ben Polak, Michael Richter, and Larry Samuelson, as well as the audiences at Harvard and Yale, for their helpful comments. Axiomatization and Measurement of Quasi-hyperbolic Discounting*

This article provides an axiomatic characterization of quasi-hyperbolic discounting and a more general class of semi-hyperbolic preferences. We impose consistency restrictions directly on the intertemporal trade-offs by relying on what we call ‘‘annuity compensations.’’ Our axiomatization leads naturally to an experimental design that disentangles discounting from the elasticity of intertempora...

Testable Implications of Models of Intertemporal Choice: Exponential Discounting and Its Generalizations

We present the first revealed-preference characterizations of the models of exponential discounting, quasi-hyperbolic discounting, and other time-separable models of consumers’ intertemporal decisions. We contribute to the axiomatic work that tries to describe the behavioral content of models of intertemporal choice. Ours is the first axiomatization of these models taking finite consumption str...

Online Appendix to: “Axiomatization and measurement of Quasi-hyperbolic Discounting”

As discussed before our initial sample consists of two groups of subjects. Group “M” has 639 subjects that answered the “Money” questionnaire. Group “IC” has 640 subjects that answered the “Ice-cream” questionnaire. Inside each group, we associate subjects with an Internet Protocol address (IP) and we verify that there is no IP repetition inside the group. Consequently, we do not allow for a si...

Present-bias, quasi-hyperbolic discounting, and fixed costs

Article history: Received 28 January 2008 Available online xxxx JEL classification: C91 D03 D90 In this paper we elicit preferences for money–time pairs via experimental techniques. We estimate a general specification of discounting that nests exponential and hyperbolic discounting, as well as various forms of present bias, including quasi-hyperbolic discounting. We find that discount rates are...
